FC Barcelona won their 29th La Liga title by defeating Real Madrid 2-0 in the first El Clásico in history in which the trophy was won.
For the first time in the history of the Spanish league, FC Barcelona won the 2025/26 La Liga title by defeating Real Madrid 2-0 on Sunday night, May 10, 2026. The match took place at the Spotify Camp Nou Stadium on the 35th day of the season, with Barcelona needing just one point to secure the title with two games to go.
Barcelona started brightly, with Marcus Rashford opening the scoring in the 9th minute with a beautiful shot from outside the box. Ferran Torres added a second in the 18th minute after a fine pass from Dani Olmo. Real Madrid tried to get back into the game in the first half, with Gonzalo Garcia missing a good chance past goalkeeper Joan Garcia, but the first half ended with Barcelona leading 2-0.
The second half saw the game slow down, with the ball being played in the middle of the pitch. In the 64th minute, Vinícius Júnior tried to give Real Madrid a goal but Joan Garcia made a save. In the 70th minute, Jude Bellingham scored but the referee disallowed it for a foul. Real Madrid were also playing without striker Kylian Mbappé, who was in disciplinary proceedings.
The 2-0 victory gave Barcelona 91 points, 14 ahead of second-placed Real Madrid with just three games remaining. It meant they had won the league for the second time in a row, their 29th in La Liga history. It also confirmed that Real Madrid are not likely to win it again this year.
This is the first time in 97 years that a team has won the La Liga title in El Clásico, a match between two of Spain's greatest rivals. The event at Camp Nou once again demonstrated the strength of Barcelona this year, where they were in front of their home fans and controlled the game well until they won the title.
FC Barcelona currently has 29 La Liga titles, second only to Real Madrid with 36. Real Madrid remains the most decorated club in Spain since La Liga began in 1929. Both of these make El Clásico one of the most prestigious and historic matches in the world.
For Barcelona, the victory is a sign that the new coach's project is bearing fruit after winning a second consecutive title. For Real Madrid, the victory highlights the need for changes in management and player behavior before next year. The 2026 El Clásico once again shows that the La Liga competition remains a constant battle between the two most powerful teams in the world.
